I don’t get political often but this is such a classic example of the double standards of Western society and the stereotypes about islam and the women in islam! *Click on the picures to get full view*
haha you’re wrong both are oppressed
internalized misogyny ftw
That kind of erases women’s agency. A woman can freely choose to wear a hijab or a habit, without that choice being the result of internalized misogyny. She has the ability to engage with the meaning of her religious practices and decide what they mean for herself. Just as high heels can either be read as either empowering or oppressive, so can a hijab.
I think a pretty significant difference that should be pointed out is ALL women being forced to wear something by law, and women freely choosing to live life a certain way… I’m not going to point out which is which, because I do believe it’s obvious.
I think the hijab is kinda pretty.
Both are intrinsically beautiful forms of worship when chosen freely. However, in many places, one or the other IS oppressed, which is sad. In France, for example, Muslim women CANNOT wear certain garments while Christian women can wear whatever they want— it’s to prevent Muslim men from oppressing their wives by forcing Hijab on them. Supposedly, anyway. And in some places in the Middle East where Islam is the state religion require women to be covered up. It’s my understanding that some require a full burqa and some only require hijab, but in every case where it’s required by law, it’s oppressing women because it takes away their freedom to choose to wear a hijab or not to wear a hijab.
Christian women tend not to face these kinds of oppression in most cases. Unfortunately, Christians (especially Catholics) face our own kinds of oppression. (Not in the US, certainly, or the UK, but in some countries, like China, Christians and especially Catholics are oppressed)
