And this other time, we were driving down to New Jersey and got lost in Newark. And she kept going on about how apparently all the black people around were going to rape and kill us. I was fourteen, by the way. Not a pleasant experience.

My aunt has a thing against people from India. My mom’s whole side of the family was basically raised to think that you should only marry someone of your race/religion. Because otherwise things get “Complicated” with a capitol C. Now, the religion part, I understand, because I’m going through that atm with my boyfriend (he’s atheist, I’m Catholic, it’s complicated) but race has nothing to do with anything. Then my cousin Roger married a Chinese woman, who is actually really nice and is doing a pretty good job raising her family in my opinion. And it took the whole family ages to get over the fact that she is Chinese, because they were taught (basically) to stick to your own “kind”.

Even now she still faces some discomfort from other family members. JUST because she’s Chinese. Now, they live in California, so IDK all the details/nuances, but yeah.
